The Grandmaster The Grandmaster, director Wong Kar Wai’s (In The Mood For Love, 2046) exploration of the life of Kung Fu legend Ip Man (played by longtime Kar Wai collaborator Tony Leung), hits Blu-ray and DVD November 26.
Hopefully the film, which is being released via Anchor Bay Entertainment and The Weinstein Company, will get a second life upon its release, since it’s another visually breathtaking and evocative tale from Wong Kar Wai.
Although he’s known for bringing a painterly and unique style to his features, Kar Wai also brings an deep, emotional core to his work. Ip Man’s struggles to retain his values amidst tragedy and the ravages of time, as well as his profound bond with fellow martial arts practitioner Gong Er (played to heartbreaking effect by Ziyi Zhang), give The Grandmaster a wonderful level of emotional gravitas. Of course, Yuen Wo Ping’s (The Matrix) inspired choreography, especially in the opening, rain drenched fight scene, is also a must see.
Special features on both editions include the featurette “From Ip Man to Bruce Lee: A Conversation with Shannon Lee (Bruce Lee’s daughter), behind the scenes footage, and “The Grandmaster: According to RZA.”
